Aloe's use in medicine has climbed up the charts with time. From the time it was first discovered in Africa, this lily look-alike with thick, green leaves set in a rosette pattern has been the fascination of the medical world for its multiple uses. Its leaves, the pulp, the latex, the juice and the capsule are popular versions of aloe vera used for its medicinal values. Aloe is a storehouse of vitamins, amino acids, minerals and enzymes.

Aloe is generally used topically in the treatment of burns, scalds, sunburn, eczema, skin irritation, wounds, ulcers, dermatitis, psoriasis, acne and regeneration of cells. Carboxypeptidase and bradykininase are two enzymes found in aloe. They aid in the reduction of swelling, inflammation, itching and pain. Wounds heal faster with aloe treatment even in surgical and traumatic cases. Vitamin E, C, polysaccharides and zinc found in aloe help reduce inflammation and aid in the repair process.

Insect bites and small wounds are treated using aloe juice. Aloe juice forms a protective layer which is like plaster over the injury. What makes aloe a first-class skincare product is its astringent and calming properties. Aloe is also used in the treatment of hemorrhoids.

Studies have shown that aloe vera is capable of treating skin cancer and damage. Psoriasis and other skin diseases also respond to aloe treatment. Frostbite cases have shown a reduction in the incidence of amputation and tissue loss when aloe is used in treatment.
